After graduating from Hunan Normal University, Huang He served the army for four years. In 1997, he was demobilized and transferred to Xiaoxiang Film Studio, where he worked as literary editor, producer and marketing producer. In 2006, Their Noah’s Ark, the first film he produced as an independent filmmaker, was released. The movie won Best Environmental Film and Most Promising Actress at the 11th Shanghai International Film Festival in 2008. In the same year, his film debut Pingshou Deng was nominated for the 13th Huabiao Awards for Outstanding Feature, Outstanding Writer, Outstanding Actor and Outstanding New Actress, and was shortlisted for the 27th Golden Rooster Awards for Best Directorial Debut and Best Actor. Huang was born in a poor family and grew up deep in the mountains. Before he went to college in 1989, he had worked as a doctor for a year, an agricultural technician for three years and a worker for a year. He later spent two years studying history in college and then went into business for a year. These rich experiences enabled Huang to depict the dull social reality with tender words. Thanks to the valuable life experience, formidable knowledge of literature, and vivid depiction of characters, his films always strike a sympathetic chord among audiences.
